 Creating a Budget You Can Live With
There are few things in our financial lives with as much importance as a good monthly budget, but all too few of us take the time to create this important document. For many of us, creating a budget brings to mind images of complicated spreadsheets and difficult calculations, but the truth is a household budget is within the abilities of virtually every consumer.
The most important step in the creation of a monthly budget is the decision to make one. Many of us never get past this important decision, but it is important to persevere. A monthly budget will give you the clearest picture of just where your money is going, and once you know where the money is going you can take steps to keep it from slipping through your fingers.
One of the most effective ways to get this clear picture of your monthly spending is to write down everything you spend for a month. This can seem a complicated and burdensome procedure, but it does not have to be. Simply carrying a small notepad and pen in your pocket is all that it takes. Each time you make a purchase, whether with cash, check or credit card, write down the item purchased and the price.
At the end of each day, record these purchases in a ledger, a spreadsheet or your favorite financial software package. By the end of the month you will have a clear picture of just how much money you are spending on things like dinners out, gas, food and other purchases. Once you have this clear picture in front of you it will be a lot easier to find ways to save money.
Creating a household budget is not always easy, and no one every said it was fun, but it is important. The creation of a realistic monthly budget is one of the most important things anyone can do to ensure their financial future.
