Based in Nairobi, VSO Jitolee is a partner agency of VSO International with shared identity, mandate, vision, mission, and values. We work through volunteers to fight poverty and disadvantage across the world.
VSO Jitolee offers unique opportunities to East African nationals to share their skills and learn about other cultures elsewhere in the developing world. We also provide an opportunity for personal and professional growth as volunteers work in challenging environments, live in ways that are sensitive to the cultural values of others and develop relationships based on shared circumstances and mutual respect.
VSO Jitolee recruits from a diverse range of professional areas. These include:
BUSINESS MANAGMENT & IT
(Management/financial/organizational Development Advisors, Project Managers, Small Business/Microenterprise Development Advisors, Fundraisers and ICT Trainers)
COMMUNITY & SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
(community/social development workers, community facilitators/organizers, registered social workers)
TECHNICAL & NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
(agriculturists, agricultural business managers, agriculture extension officers, agriculture teachers, agro-foresters, community foresters, horticulturists, natural resources managers, community-based environmentalists, fisheries specialists, livestock/vets, Civil Engineers, Agricultural Engineers)
HEALTH, HIV & AIDS
(physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, HIV/AIDS professionals, maternal and child health professionals, medical laboratory officers, primary health/community-based health educators)
Occasionally we may recruit candidates outside these areas in response to the needs of our development partners.
Most jobs are for a two-year period and offer the potential for sharing skills and building capabilities. Such jobs provide a structure within which a volunteer can build relationships and work effectively while serving the needs of disadvantaged people.
Some volunteers are married with children and are part of extended families that rely on mutual support. However VSO Jitolee takes special care in ensuring that volunteers do not expect to meet financial obligations or save from their volunteer allowances in order to support dependants back home. They are not motivated by money. In fact, some are giving up comfortable lives and salaries several times more than the volunteers allowance in order to volunteer overseas.
