Touch Humanity offers opportunities for University and College Students alike. The Student Zone are pleased to support Touch Humanity by ensuring the international community of students are aware of gap year, summer and after degree opportunities to support and learn volunteering on work camps in Kenya. Touch-Humanity International Voluntary Services (THIVS) is a Kenyan-based non-profit organization founded in October 2001 by a group of Kenyans who previously worked with Non-Governmental Organisations, community-based groups or served as volunteers in Kenya and abroad.
The founder members had a common desire to join forces and take steps to touch the souls of the needy, troubled and suffering people in community through humanitarian services.
But it was not until February 2003 that THIVS - then based at Kenya Aids Society offices started engaging in community voluntary activities. The members participated in some events in Nairobi which included visiting orphans homes to spend time with children who needed love, cleaning the polluted river and jointly organized a beauty show for slum poor girls' education bursary.
The initial undertakings kicked off the journey into the future voluntary work. Since those days, THIVS has slowly evolved and grown - establishing international network and partnership with 50 community-based development projects in the Kenya's rural villages and semi-urban areas where the level of awareness is still low, resources limited and abject poverty widespread.
Mission THIVS works to alleviate human suffering socially, psychologically and economically through provision of life-support mechanism by promoting humanitarian values. The idea is to promote volunteering as a powerful force for change, both for those who volunteer and for the wider community.
Goal
THIVS actively work to mobilize and bring additional human resources to the community to enhance their capacity to utilize locally available resources to achieve their socio-economic goals as they themselves, identify, design and define them to develop and become self-reliance.
We develop work camps programmes and recruit skilled and no-skilled volunteers who are deployed to work with local people - stimulating and motivating them in daily efforts to confront and overcome some specific problems and challenges to attain un-met needs.
THIVS Objectives
To mobilise and bring on additional human resources to the community to enhance capacity to utilise locally available resources and efforts for tangible development.
To offer a lifetime opportunity for young people become a force for change.
To develop volunteers to work actively on less-developed locations within identified areas and community.
To promote efforts to help community achieve the unmet needs through placement of interested volunteers to share skills for the benefit of realistic development on new and ongoing projects.
To create sustainable community projects through volunteer placement in specific areas of human development.
To promote cultural integration and building of friendship, solid partnership and international understanding.
To build volunteer exchange programmes and participate in events to enhance sharing of information for increased interaction among volunteers to strengthen global volunteer's movement.
To network with the youth and voluntary both locally and international organisations to promote concepts, spirit of voluntarism and create opportunities for mutual benefit of both the partner and THIVS.
To do all such things that are incidental to or conducive to the attainment of any of the above objectives.
